TABETE is a Japanese app designed to help reduce food waste. It connects shops that have leftover food with consumers, allowing them to sell still-edible items at a discounted price instead of throwing them away.
Users can browse stores, reserve pickup times, pay online, and then collect their items at the shop.
In Tokyo, most participating stores are located in the city center, while in suburban areas like where I live, there are only one or two stores taking part.
So far, I’ve mostly seen bakeries and cake shops joining TABETE. Hopefully, more delis and restaurants will join in the future — it would be great to enjoy tasty food at lower prices! 😋
Although all food sold through TABETE is still within its safe consumption period, it may not be as fresh as newly made items. If you’re very particular about taste and texture, this might not be ideal for you.
