A Small Moment on a Japanese Train

Do We Really Need to Be That Considerate?

As usual, I took the train to work.
It wasn’t a packed one — not empty either. Same platform, same car, same spot to line up every day.

But today was a bit different — the car was full of students.
Funny thing is, there were empty seats, but no one sat down.

Four students got on together. There were three empty seats in front of them.
Yet, no one moved.
They just looked at each other, then at the seats.

What’s even more interesting — they kept offering the seats to each other,
“Go ahead, you sit.”
“No, no, it’s fine!”
And in the end, all four of them just stood there… for a whole hour.

So what is it?
Because there weren’t enough seats for everyone, no one wanted to sit?
Or because one person sitting might feel awkward?

Watching them, I couldn’t help but think —
maybe this is how Japanese people train their “iron legs” from a young age 🤣

If it were me, trying to be that considerate, I’d probably be exhausted before the day even started.

Maybe… it’s better not to fit in too much.
